Joséphine Wister Faure : WHAT DO YOU SEE WHEN YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES?

Joséphine Wister Faure’s installation entitled Last Witness is a series of black boxes containing closed and finite worlds. A peephole compels each viewer to explore a boundless scene filled with enigmatic hints. One comes back from these paralleled journeys with different hypotheses, doubts, sensations of space, feelings of strangeness and fleeting impressions.
The artist questions the mechanisms of perception as well as the observer’s implication and creates openings for a narrative in which no scenario is imposed. The expansion of space and time builds its very own dramaturgy opening an infinite mental space.
French-American artist Joséphine Wister Faure has a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the University of Vermont and graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts of Paris. She has taken part in various exhibitions in France at the Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard, The Frac Île-de- France (Le Plateau), Centre Pompidou and David Lynch's club Silencio in Paris. Her work has been exhibited in Europe, the United States, and China. She is now based in Los Angeles and has recently exhibited at Boîte.

In this exhibit, 3 artists demonstrate the cyclical creative process of writing into art and art into writing.
Karen Kinney’s series of small drawings were created while writing her first book, “The Reluctant Artist,” coming out this June. The drawings are a visual departure from her recent work, and represent something new being birthed at the same time she was beginning to express herself through writing. Although not included in the book itself, their creation helped inform the writing and vice versa. The two expressions are energetically connected and together, represent a return to beginnings. In addition to her large-scale installation, mural, and smaller scale collage work, Karen has a background in social work.
Krista Machovina focuses on the book she is writing which delves into the wisdom of vintage survival manuals and informs healthy adaptive behaviors in the face of personal dysfunction and distress. Her visual art pieces emerged as deeper exploration of the book’s concepts, which in turn fed back into areas further explored in the writing. Her education and experience as a mental health counselor and art therapist influenced this series.
Melanie Mandl’s work illustrates the interdependency of image and narrative. It is difficult to extract which comes first, the writing or the visual art. Although the writing and art could stand independently, they are richer combined. Mandl has a background as a Director, Production Designer, and Stop-motion Animator.

CRASHERS: Art from Spain, Berlin and Beyond (Extended to April 3rd)
Los Angeles-based curator IdolWild partners with Spain’s Swinton Gallery for it’s premiere international art exhibit at Keystone Art Gallery.
In a collaborative effort, Los Angeles-based Curator’s IdolWild and Spain’s Swinton Gallery, will come together in Los Angeles to present a group art exhibit that is some what outsider in nature, and fervent with experiences beyond the United States border. While a wall of insecurity is looming, curator IdolWild summons visual refuge, exposing the undercurrents of the European art scene.
Crashers: Art from Spain, Berlin and Beyond, gathers the artistic insights from a selection of exciting, multi-disciplinary artists of Spanish descent. Representing countries from all over South America and Europe, this group of emerging artists were hand selected by Goyo Villasevil and Sergio Bang, Directors of the prestigious Swinton Gallery in Madrid, Spain. Swinton Gallery works with courageous artists who dare to publicly announce strong, personal opinions. For Crashers: Art from Spain, Berlin and Beyond, artists were asked to create works that would be loud, impeding, and disrupting normality for it’s spectators. “I feel it’s important to have a cultural and artistic dialogue between nations, especially now.”, explains IdolWild’s Micke Tong. “This is a great opportunity to share artwork from a spectrum of multidisciplinary artists that the community of Los Angeles would probably not have been able to encounter otherwise.”
Artist’s participating include SABEK (SPN), Andrés Senra (SPN), Mario Mankey (BLN), Rurru Mipanochia (MEX), Alice Pasquini (ITA), Javier Iglesias GNOSICK (SPN), Judas Arrieta (SPN), Víctor Solana (SPN), Alaniz (ARG), Alberto M. Crashers: Art from Spain, Berlin and Beyond, will take place at Keystone Art Gallery, an exhibition space that houses over 50 artists studios in the district of Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles, California. This event will be open to the public and will run from March 18 - April 3, 2017. Opening reception will be Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 7pm-11pm. The reception will offer live performance by L.A. Drones, as well as refreshments and giveaways. The event will be free and open to the public. Please be advised there will be mature content present.

Don’t Talk About It, Do It
A tribute for Dave Brockie and the Artists who created GWAR
October 25 - November 6, 2014
A group of visual artists and musicians joined forces in the mid-eighties in Richmond, Virginia,
creating a completely unique and highly theatrical metal band. They called themselves GWAR.
Housed in a derelict former dairy building, the artists fabricated costumes, set pieces and props for elaborate scripted live shows, soundtracked by the musicians. This studio became known as the “Slave Pit” and almost instantly became a magnet for art students at nearby Virginia Commonwealth University. The credo and mission statement for GWAR was “Don’t talk about it, do it,” a direct reaction to the formalism of art education that was prevalent at VCU and the local Richmond art scene. Inspired by sci-fi, spatter flicks and kung fu movies, everyone involved with GWAR embraced a do-it-yourself work ethic, working together to manifest a creative expression the likes of which the world had never seen.
Curated by Keystone Art Space Director and artist Melanie Mandl and Keystone Gallery Director and artist Mark Harvey, the Fall 2014 exhibition "Don't Talk About It, Do It," focuses on the early 90’s. It was a time both Mandl and Harvey were documenting the group, along with photographer Katherine Leatherwood. The unique exhibition will include never before seen photographs and video footage, as well as past and present work from various members of GWAR.
The exhibition was conceptualized to honor Dave Brockie, lead singer and founding member of GWAR, himself a prolific visual artist. Brockie died in March of 2014, a devastating loss for not only the Slave Pit, but also GWAR fans across the globe. The current members of the group have decided to continue on, and will begin touring again in the United States in October 2014.

Exciting news from Zachary Schoch's Keystone studio:
For Immediate Release LOS ANGELES, California – May 28, 2014... The future of the built environment is 3D printed. The m_Wall, showcased at the Maker Fair 2014, was printed in only two pieces and stands over 6 feet 4 inches tall (1.9 meters). Printed with the Euclid Robot 3D printer using both black and clear ABS plastic, the m_Wall is extremely strong with a single pass print thickness of over 1/4 inch (6.35mm). The wall is created from two 5 hour prints making for a total print time of only 10 hours. And yes, that is fast, well compared to most printers.
In order to print architecture, it needs to be created using less expensive methods than those of ‘traditional’ 3D printing. Time is money, and now architectural scale 3D printing is economically feasible as demonstrated by the m_Wall due to the high speed and inexpensive plastic pellet based Euclid Robot 3D printer. Because time has a direct corollary to cost, Bot Laboratory constantly strives to drastically reduce print times.
Designed using Grasshopper 3D, all of the motion and extrusion data required to print the m_wall was completely scripted inside of Grasshopper using a custom script developed by Zachary Schoch. This process takes the place of the traditional ‘slicing’ step. It has the advantage of allowing the designer to not only design the form of what they want, but to also design the nature of how it is created; for instance, the ability to use print layers that are at funny angles or print layers that are curved and non-planar, or to directly script the path of the machine in order to create a geometry instead of the traditionally reversed geometry first process.

Zachary Schoch is a Roboticist, Inventor, Designer and founder of Bot Laboratory where he is pushing the limits of 3D printing and robotic fabrication. Through a careful fusion of his diverse backgrounds in mechanical engineering, race car design, and architecture, Zach has designed and developed the Euclid Robot 3D printer, a large scale Cartesian machine that 3D prints a huge variety of plastics using inexpensive pellets. By leveraging custom scripting and a mega 3D printer, Zach is able to design and print elements at spatial and architectural scale. Through exploring the potential of machines and their impact on architecture, Zach seeks to revolutionize the way we create and build space.
Keystone artists Danny Perez recently designed and directed a video for Vertical Scratchers at Keystone Shoot Space in the warehouse. Keystone's SOME FAB studio laser cut the stencils Danny used to paint the set. Check out the video:

One will find an emerging generation of experimenters in the Blindspot Initiative exhibition at Keystone Gallery. The show features a multidisciplinary group of ten artists, designers, and architects. Eight out of ten, however, have a background in architecture. Somewhere Something, a multidisciplinary design and fabrication studio founded by Biayna Bogosian, Jason King, and Sacha Bauman, and Jose Sanchez of Plethora Project curated the show, drawing on a number of the designers and makers with studios at Keystone Art Space on San Fernando Road in Atwater Village.
"I'm glad it's not a field of objects that blink," says King of the gallery full of artworks, artifacts, videos, and installations where the designers relied on computation and advance technologies as part of the developmental process. Zachary Schoch's gooey-looking vases, for instance, are the products of a robot he built himself to create large-scale 3-D printed objects. He first developed the robot as a thesis student at SCI-Arc. Built out of sections steel tubing and electronics, a MakerBot on steroids, it's housed down the hall in his studio. For "Aluvium" (2014), filmmaker Catherine Griffiths of Isohale combined video and coding to create a memorizing loop in which ecological data is processed, visualized, animated, and overlaid on desert landscapes.
"DOT/O" (2014), Somewhere Something and Plethora's collaborative contribution, sits in the center of the gallery. An organically shaped steel armature covered in colored thread, the piece wills visitors to touch and engage the sculpture by weaving thread across the form. Inspired by game theory, there are very basic rules posted on the wall: "max span is an arm length" or "connect dots on alternate rods." The result of these simple instructions is a complex, collaborative (or crowd-sourced) sculpture.
